Holding the Bible Hostage
David Kerr at Lingamish has an interesting article about the Bible in Portuguese.
It seems that the Bible Society of Brazil uses copyright restrictions to forbid individuals and institutions from making digital texts and audio files of Portuguese Bibles available freely online.
It is sad that Bible Societies are using their translations to make money rather than to make God’s Word available to people everywhere. When translating the Bible is turned into a profit-making business, we know that the church is in trouble.
As David wrote: “To paraphrase Emerson, make the Bible illegal and we all become criminals.” As a Brazilian, I am appalled that the Bible Society of Brazil does not allow the Portuguese version of the Bible to be posted online. I am going to work hard to change this shameful situation.

You don't have to look far for publishers restricting the use of Bible translations. Zondervan/NIV comes to mind. Tyndale/ESV is much more permissive, and thus is enjoying steady growth and acceptance in Evangelical circles.

The problem with many new Bible translations today is that they have been produced by businesses and thus, their main goal is profit. When the Bible is held for profit, then the discemination of God's Word is limited.

Quando há muitas traduções eu não vejo nenhum problema em controlar a distribuição de algumas. Especialmente em sociedades como os estados unidos onde o mercado é a melhor maneira de assegurar amplia distribuição. Mas eu sinto que pelo menos uma tradução formal e outra simples devem ser espalhadas sem restrições de "marca registada." No caso de português a Almeida deve ser disponível numa edição correcta e TPC, BLH ou o Livro para uma edição fácil de ler.

Eu tenho que confessar que o seu português é melhor que o meu. Já fazen cinquenta anos que deixei de falar o português como o meu idioma.
É triste saber que a Sociedade Bíblica do Brasil não permite a distribuição da Biblia por meio eletrónico na Internete. Como você escreveu, parece que tudo é por causa de dinheiro e isto é contrario àquilo que Jesus Cristo ensina no evangelio.
