INTRODUCTION
The Books of 1-2 Chronicles were originally one book in the
Hebrew Bible.
The division of Chronicles into two books was made by the
translators of the LXX in the second century B.C.E. The Hebrew
title of the book is dibrê
hayy~mîm,
an expression meaning "the events of the days." In the LXX the book is
called Paraleipomena,
"the things omitted." This title was interpreted
to mean that Chronicles includes supplemental material omitted by
the other historical books, mainly Samuel and Kings. The English
title "Chronicles" goes back to the Vulgate; Jerome called the book
"a chronicle of the whole divine history."
