Palestine has experienced destructive
earthquakes in the past because the region is located in an area of
several prominent tectonic structures. The rift of the Jordan
Valley is a
major seismic region capable of generating powerful
earthquakes. The two
major epicenters of Palestine lie in
the Samaritan countryside around Nablus (biblical Shechem) and in the
Jordan Valley at Jericho.
In Palestine the evidence of collapses
and subsequent abandonment resulting from earthquakes is attested at
several Sites (e.g., Hazor and Tel. Deir ‘Alla). Earthquakes caused the
destruction of structures.
Following an earthquake, some Cities were renovated while
others were abandoned and served as community dumps. Rebuilding was always slow
because of the depressed economic situation caused by the
earthquake.
